CROGHAN, NY ~ Dolores “Laurie” Ann Monnat, 84, of Convent St., Croghan, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in the comfort of the Hospice Room at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.

Born on August 27, 1933, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, she was a daughter of Eugene and Margaret (LaBombard) Hirsch. She received her education at Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan, from where she graduated with the class of 1951, and then attended the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Watertown from where she graduated in 1954 with an RN degree.  Following nursing school, Laurie became a Registered Nurse at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville until 1957.

She married Gilbert J. Monnat on June 2, 1956 in St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.

In 1978, she began work as a Family Service Worker for Lewis County Headstart until 1980, when she became a Caseworker for the Lewis County Department of Social Services, from where she worked until retiring in 1995.

Laurie was a lifelong communicant of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, and was a volunteer at Croghan Free Library for many years.

She will be remembered always as the loving wife and mother she was to her large family, and as the wonderful friend she was to so many throughout the community.  Throughout the years, she enjoyed knitting, was an avid reader, and particularly enjoyed any time spent with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her loving husband, Gilbert, of almost 62 years; her six children, William E. Monnat, Stephen G. (Jane) Monnat, Peter J. (Melody) Monnat, Gilbert J.(Gretchen) Monnat II, Susan E. (Brad) Gydesen, and Nancy C. (Rod) Widrick, all of Croghan; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; a brother, David (Emily) Hirsch, of Adams Center, her sister, Cheryl E. Steiner, of Clinton, sister-in-law, Conne Hirsch of Lowville and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Anthony J. “Tony” Monnat, who died in March, 1977 and a brother John Hirsch.

Laurie’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 11:00 am. at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 5, 2018, from 2:00 pm till 4:00 pm and 6:00pm till 8:00 pm at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.

A Graveside Committal Service for Laurie will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018, at 1:15 p.m. in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor of St. Stephen's Church, officiating.

Such a bitter sweet time. I (Edith) loved Laurie so much. We had great times working at Social Services. Laurie was a very empathetic person, always concerned about others. She was very proud of her family and justifiably so. You are a wonderful family. God bless.

Gil & family,
Gil - I am so sorry for passing of Laurie. I can't imagine losing your mate of 62 years. I know what a special union you both had and what a place she held in your heart that no human can replace. God Bless You as you endure through all of this.
The rest of the family - you most certainly are a special family. My condolences go out to each of you (and the extended family as well). Your mom and dad parented a family which exemplifies what we like to hope Lewis County stands for: love for family, church, community, and Jesus. It is because of families like yours that we live in, enjoy, and have the community that we do. God Bless each of you.
