SCHENECTADY, NY/HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Mary Ellen (Scanlon) Tesch, 65, of Rolling Hills Rd., Schenectady, formerly of Harrisville, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at the Hospice Inn of St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY.  Her death followed a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Mary Ellen was born on April 21, 1952 in Utica, NY, the daughter of James J. and Margaret M. (Conboy) Scanlon, and was a 1970 graduate of Harrisville Central School.  In 1974, she was graduated from The College of St. Rose in Albany where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.

She married John H. Tesch, of Albany, on May 24, 1975.

Following college and her marriage, Mary Ellen’s first career began in education where she taught primarily 6th through 8th grade English and general education at various Catholic and public schools in the Albany area.  Her second career was with the Department of State in Albany, from where she completed her service, retiring in 2014, as a Supervisor in the Division of Corporations, State Records, & UCC.

Throughout her life she enjoyed crafting, especially making jewelry, travels with family and her girlfriends, fighting for couch space with her adopted Boxer, “Oscar”, and above all, cherished any time spent with her grandchildren.

By her family’s characterization, Mary Ellen was the “definition of unconditional love”.  Her light, her love, her laugh, her smile and her hugs brightened every room and life she walked into.  Those rooms are still lit up, honoring, loving, celebrating and missing the life that made lives around her better because she was in it.

Surviving in addition to her husband, John, are three sons, Jeremy Tesch, Justin (Marisha) Tesch and Jacob Tesch, all of Albany; two grandchildren, Jaden and Kelsey Tesch, of Albany; her brother and sister-in-law, James E. and Caroline Scanlon, of Rome; five nieces, Kelly (Jesse) Tripp, of Rolesville, NC, Alicia Scanlon, of Syracuse, NY, Jennifer (Matthew) Mogel, of Lee Center, NY, Megan Scanlon, of NYC, NY, and Kristen Scanlon, of Boston, MA; her very special best friend, Claudia Fisher, of Albany (who was with her until the end); all of her very special longtime Harrisville girlfriends, and her many cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, who died in 2005, and her mother, who died in 2009.

Mary Ellen’s funeral will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from the New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205, with the Rev. Alan Jupin, retired Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Schenectady, officiating.  Burial will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, April 26th, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

To the Tesch and Scanlon Familes,

Our sincerest condolences to all of the families on Mary Ellen's death. Having Mary Ellen and all the Scanlon's as neighbors in Harrisville and as a classmate in the class of 1970 was all very special. She always had a wonderful sense of herself and always had a great smile that could light up any room. She will be sorely missed. We will keep the families in our prayers.
