CROGHAN, NY ~ Jean L. Brownell, 94, formerly of Mechanic St., Croghan, died Thursday, October 22, 2020, at Carthage Area Hospital, Carthage, where she had been admitted earlier in the day from The Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Carthage, where she had been a resident for the past two years.

 Born January 25, 1926 in Watertown, NY, the daughter of Francis and Iva (McIntosh) Mattimore, she was a 1944 graduate of the former Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.  She later went on to Manpower Training School through Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville from where she received her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree in 1969.

She married Walter J. Brownell on September 6, 1945 in the rectory of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan.  Mr. Brownell died on February 24, 2012.

Prior to her marriage, she worked at her father’s A&P Grocery Store in Croghan.

During the 1960’s, Jean and her husband, Walter, owned and operated Willie and Jean’s Diner on Main Street in Croghan.

For many years, she worked as an LPN at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville before retiring in 1983.

Jean was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan and was also a member of its Altar & Rosary Society.  Always active in her church and community, she was also a volunteer for the Lewis County General Hospital as well as a hospice volunteer.  For many years, she spent many days and hours taking care of the elderly or visiting those who were alone.

Throughout her life, she took great pleasure in her family. She adored her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.  She was a care giver by nature and took wonderful care of her husband, especially with his medical conditions prior to his death.

Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Bush, of Croghan, and Theresa (Carl) McCane III, of Lake Ariel, PA; a son, Stephen Brownell, of Croghan; ten grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Joyce) Mattimore, of North Syracuse, NY; three sisters-in-law, June Loftus of Gansevoort, NY, Arletha Mattimore, of Croghan, and Donna Brownell, of Kansas City, MO; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Neil (Jerrie) Brownell, of West Monroe, NY, and James (Connie) Brownell, of Pulaski, NY, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, Walter, of 67 years, she was predeceased by her son, Terry Brownell, a sister, Mary McNeil, and four brothers, Donald, Raymond, William and Robert Mattimore.

Family and friends are invited to attend Jean’s funeral Mass which will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Face masks and social distancing required. 

Burial will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

A private Prayer Service for the family will be held at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan. prior to her Mass of Christian Burial.

In Jean’s memory, please consider memorial donations to St. Stephen’s Church Restoration Fund or to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department.
