CROGHAN ~ Viola A. Kohler, 91, formerly of 8586 Erie Canal Rd., Croghan, NY, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since January.

Born November 15, 1917, in the Town of New Bremen, a daughter of Fred G. and Laura Houppert Kohler, she was educated in rural country school in the Town of New Bremen and attended Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.

She went to work for Climax Manufacturing Company in Castorland in 1942 where she worked as a gluer-feeder operator, feeding cardboard into fabricating machines where they would become boxes. She retired in 1983 after 41 years of service. For many years, she assisted her sister, Nina, helping to raise the rest of her family after her mother’s death at a young age. Just as her sister Nina was, Viola was also very close to her nieces and nephews, especially when they were children.

Miss Kohler was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, and was a member of its Rosary Society. She was also a former member of the Kirschnerville Grange.

She enjoyed baking, making latch hook rugs, and tending to the huge home garden and taking care of the outside of her family’s home that she had shared with her sister, Nina . She especially enjoyed reading the Bible.

Survivors include her brother, Frederick J. Kohler, of Croghan; 4 nieces, Betty Kuhl, of Croghan, Joyce Brown, of Watertown, Anne-Marie Kohler, of Canastota and Alicia Kohler, of Croghan, and 2 nephews, Martin Brown, of Tupper Lake and Tony Kohler, of Watertown.

She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Mary Brown, who died in 1975, and Nina F. Kohler, who died in 2008.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, with the Rev. Daniel Chapin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be from 6 – 8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to either the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Fund or Lewis Co. Residential Health Care Facility’s Activities Fund. Envelopes for both will be available at the funeral home.
