HARRISVILLE ~ Thaddeus L. “Ted” Mealus, 89, of 14331 Pearl Street, Harrisville, died Friday, October 02, 2009, at his residence where he was under the care of his loving family and Lewis County Hospice.
Born November 6, 1919, in New York City, NY, a son of Thaddeus and Marguerite Thomassin Mealus, he was educated in the Reedville School District (which is now part of Ft. Drum).
He married Addie P. Cole on September 26, 1943, at the Free Methodist parsonage in Gouverneur, NY, with the Rev. Oscar Sharpe, officiating. Mrs. Mealus died on November 5, 2004.
A World War II veteran, he entered the US Army on January 18, 1945, and served primarily with 139th Ordinance Bomb Disposal Squadron in the Pacific Theatre of Operations including Okinawa and Japan. He was honorably discharged as a T/Sgt. on November 22, 1946, at Fort Dix, NJ.
As a young boy, Ted’s family moved to the Sterlingville area when he was 5 years old where they owned and operated a farm and ran a boarding house. Prior to entering the service, he worked for a short period of time at the Sterlingville Cheese Factory. He also worked as a woodsman and log cutter for the Lyndaker’s Logging, as a surveyor for New York State during the construction of the power line around Taylorville, and for St. Joseph Talc Mines in Balmat. Following the war, he returned to the St. Joseph Talc Mines where he continued to work until his retirement as a foreman in 1978 after 32 years of service.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Harrisville. He was also a member of the VFW Post 6338 in Gouverneur, the Adirondack Grange #530 in Harrisville, Harrisville Senior Citizens, and was a former member of the Wolf Creek Hunting Club.
Throughout his life, Ted was a great outdoorsman who liked hunting, fishing, gardening and sugaring. In his later years, he enjoyed helping on his son, Gene’s dairy farm and sugar bush, and also enjoyed traveling to the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Hogansburg to play the slots.
Surviving are his friend and companion, Alice Hooper, of Harrisville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gene L. and Dian Mealus, of Harrisville, Gary L. Mealus, of Ogdensburg; his former daughter-in-law, Christine LeBel, of Ogdensburg; 2 grandchildren, Michaela Young, of Harrisville, and Erin Cervini, of Carthage; 4 great grandchildren, Ashley Young, Michael Young, Tyler Cervini and Colin Cervini; 2 step grandchildren, Erin Brien, of Ilion, and Jaime Monnat, of Ogdensburg; 3 step great grandchildren, Shannon Brien, Michael Brien and Molly Brien; a sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Chester Wetzig, of Utica; a sister-in-law, Barbara Ward, of Harrisville, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his half brother, Jack Mealus.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Harrisville.
Ted’s funeral will be on Tuesday, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service from the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral service at the United Methodist Church in Harrisville, with the Rev. Frances K. Hemstreet, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Harrisville Community Cemetery, Harrisville.
