HARRISVILLE ~ Murray F. Valentine, 76, of Severna Park, Maryland, formerly of Harrisville, died on December 13, 2008, in Maryland, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Valentine retired as general manager of Curtis Bay Company in Baltimore, Maryland. Following his college graduation, he went to work for the Newton Falls Paper Company. After his service with the US Navy, he returned to northern New York to resume his career with the paper company and rose from Forester to Vice President of Resources. He moved to the Maryland area in 1981 to lead the commissioning of the Curtis Bay Company’s Bayside Terminal, retiring in 1998.

Born December 2, 1932, in Harrisville, NY, a son of Everett Eugene and Margaret Shaver Valentine, he graduated from Harrisville High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 1954 from the State College of Forestry at Syracuse University. In 1956, he was drafted into the US Navy and received a commission as a naval officer after attending officer’s candidate school. He was honorably discharged from the US Naval Station at Treasure Island in San Francisco, CA, in 1959 as a First Lieutenant.

He met his future wife, Nancy Ann Reynolds, in San Francisco, CA, while serving with the Pacific Surface Fleet. They were married November 21, 1959, in Shrewsbury, MA.

Mr. Valentine was active in his northern New York community through involvement in area business development and served as president of the local Lions Club. In Maryland, he was active in local maritime organizations including the Propeller Club of Baltimore, where he served as Treasurer for three years. He was also involved in the Tuppenny Club, the Maryland Coal Association, and the Baltimore Propeller Club Charitable Trust, where he had served on the board. He enjoyed the outdoors both on land and on water.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Jon, of Severna Park, Maryland, Joseph, of New York City, and Frank, of Cumberland, Maryland; a brother, Stuart, of Potsdam, NY; a sister, Sally Richer, of Manlius, NY; four grandchildren, Jordan, Kaylie, Ellie and Brooks; a great grandson, Dalton, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary, and two brothers, Robert and Eugene.

A graveside committal service with military honors will be held on Saturday, July 18th, at 9:00 a.m., in St. Francis Solanus Cemetery, Harrisville, NY, with the Rev. Robert Decker, pastor, of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Harrisville and St. Hubert’s Catholic Church in Star Lake, officiating. A memorial Mass will follow the committal service at 10:30 a.m. at St. Hubert’s in Church in Star Lake.
