Martha Buckingham
CROGHAN, NY ~ Martha M. Buckingham, 90, of 6814 Mechanic St., died Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at her home where she was under the care of her loving family and Lewis County Hospice.
Born November 10, 1919, in Croghan, a daughter of Claude and Hilda Andre Davoy, she was graduated from Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan in 1936.
She married Robert F. Buckingham on May 17, 1939, at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan with the Rev. Amadeus Burke, OFM, officiating. Mr. Buckingham died on December 2, 1999.
Mrs. Buckingham worked as a homemaker taking care of her large family for much of her early life. From 1960 until 1969, she worked as a cook in the cafeteria of the former Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan. In October, 1969, she went to work for AMF Incorporated Bowling Products in Lowville where she continued working until her retirement in December, 1981.
She was a life-long communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan and was a member of its Rosary Society.
She enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests including tennis in her early life and later playing golf. She especially liked card playing, traveling and spending summers at Tennis Island in her later life.
Surviving are six sons and five daughters-in-law, Allan R. and Rosie Buckingham, Thomas W. and Sharon Buckingham and James J. and Patricia Buckingham, all of Croghan, Rodney D. and Sheila Buckingham, of New Bremen, David J. and Susan Buckingham, of Brantingham, and Robert F. Buckingham, Jr., of Fulton; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Donald Lee, of Croghan, Mary Jane and Ty Olvert, of Wellesley Island, Elaine M. and John Haley, of Bluffton, SC, and Janet M. and Bern Moshier, of Beaver Falls; 30 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren; a brother, Claude Davoy, of Croghan; three sisters, Alma Rose Boshart, of Lowville, Marie Campeau and Patricia Golden, both of Croghan, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Four brothers, Paul, Bill, Wilbert Napolean “Ricky” and James Davoy, and two sisters, Elizabeth Roberts and Kathleen Aucter, predeceased her.
Her funeral services will be held on Friday, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, with the Rev. James Vacco, OFM, of St. Bonaventure University in Rochester, and former pastor of St. Stephen’s, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

We all loved Grandma B so much and will miss her terribly! She was always so proud of her kids, grandkids, and great grand kids. She will forever hold a spot in all of our hearts.
