Marion A. Golden

CARTHAGE ~ Marion A. Golden, 72, of Brady Acres, 600 S. Washington St., Carthage, NY, died Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Carthage Area Hospital, Carthage, following a long battle with cancer.

Born on August 7, 1937, in Saranac Lake, NY, a daughter of Robert E. and Mildred M. Collins Cassavaugh, she was graduated from Saranac Lake Central School in 1956, and later attended LePonto’s School of Cosmetology in Watertown.

From 1956 until the early 1970’s, she worked for American Management Association in Saranac Lake where she assisted with the company’s operation of seminars for large companies including General Electric. In 1975, she moved to and resided in Lockport until 1977, when she moved to Lowville, where she worked as a beautician for 3 years. She later moved to Carthage and for a number of years worked as a bartender at Riverside in Deer River, Wally’s in Carthage, and Crossroads in Naumburg.

Marion loved nothing more than her family and devoted friends. Her greatest happiness was always sharing hearty laughter with others and enjoying good times and good food with her loved ones. An avid world traveler, she loved hopping a plane with a friend to a far-away city or country to enjoy the local culture and cuisine.

Survivors include her son, Duke R. Derby, of Houston, TX, a sister and brother-in-law, Eve and Robert Gray, of Calhoun, KY, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her longtime companion, Donald Campany, of Castorland, and her best friend and devoted caregiver, Chris Smith, of Carthage.

Seven brothers, Raymond, Lyman, Edward, Herbert, Richard, Gordon and Gerald, and a sister, Edith Staples, all predeceased her.

There will be no funeral services or calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan. Private interment will be in Riverside Annex Cemetery, Beaver Falls.

Marion’s valiant struggle against cancer was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed, but we know she is now smiling upon and laughing with us.

Marion will be missed by so many. I am so thankful that she had accepted me back into her life as as a true friend. We enjoyed each other’s company on many trips/voyages; she was one of a kind.
