CASTORLAND, NY ~ Loren E. Pate, 61, of 6427 Old State Rd., died peacefully on Thursday, August 19, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Lewis County Hospice.
Born September 20, 1948, in Lowville, a son of Earl L. and Yvonne L’Huiller Pate, he was educated in a one room school house in Croghan and later at Beaver River Central School.
He married Deborah A. Bassette on May 15, 1993, in New Bremen.
Loren’s working career began as a teenager working as a logger in Old Forge and later for Elmer Dowling out of Fine, NY. For a couple of years in the early 1970’s, he moved to California where he worked as a helicopter logger for Colombia Helicopter Logging based in Portland, OR. He later moved back to the Croghan area and started Forest City Log Homes, designing and constructing log homes and cabins throughout the area. Always the entrepreneur, all through the rest of his life he bought, operated and sold a number of businesses including a saw mill in Belfort, the Indian River Hotel, the Forest City Saw Mill (near his home), Forest City Motors car dealership, a logging business and cut timber for the Adirondack Railroad.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Loren had many hobbies, interests and favorite pastimes that included hunting collecting and restoring old cars, obtaining his pilot’s license and flying his 1948 single-engine plane.
Surviving besides his wife, Deborah Bassette-Pate, are two sons, Chad Pate and (companion) Tracey Compton, of Castorland, and Justin Pate, of Croghan; a daughter, Ellie J. Brady and (companion) David Becker, of Lowville, and a step-daughter, Christine C. Buckley, of Sacketts Harbor; a step daughter,7 grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen E. and Janet Pate, of Castorland; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Laurie J. and Gary Smith, of Harrisville, Denise M. MacCue, of Castorland, and Kristine C. and Daniel Sauer, of Lowville; three step brothers, Paul Windover, of Watertown, Lee Windover and Scott Windover, both of Alabama, and four step sisters and two step brothers-in-law, Susan and Michael Sheltray, of Natural Bridge, Sunday and Robert Kerwin, of Gouverneur, Dawn Antunovic and Judy Antunovic, both of Marlboro, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Kevin Pate, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1988, and a sister, Julie A. Wallace, who died in 1994.
Loren’s funeral will be held on Monday, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. James Vacco, OFM, of St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, and formerly of St. Stephen’s, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, from 5 – 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to either the Lewis County Friends of Hospice or to the Lewis County Humane Society.

Uncle Loren you will be greatly missed, you were such a wonderful man, and we all loved you so so much, it just won’t be the same without you, we hope you are okay now and we think about you everyday….Love and miss you so much!
I will remember all the good times in the classes we had at BRCS and riding around in our doodlebugs on the Third Road.

i just heard of lorens passing;we worked together in pa buying timber for the beecher falls co.(ethan allen)i have fond memories of loren,he was quite a character!
