Joseph R. Szalkowski
LOWVILLE, NY ~ Joseph R. Szalkowski, 88, formerly of 10224 State Rt. 26, Lowville (Denmark), died Tuesday, April 26, 2011, in the Skilled Nursing Unit of Carthage Area Hospital, Carthage, where he had resided since 2009.
Joe was born on January 13, 1923, in West Leyden, NY, a son of William and Mary Gacek Szalkowski, and was educated in West Leyden schools.
He married Mavis A. Getman on November 29, 1952, at St. Peter’s Church. Lowville, and together, they enjoyed over 52 years of marriage until Mae’s death on January 11, 2005.
In his early life, Joe worked on his family’s farm in West Leyden and on a farm in Florida. In the 1950’s, he went to work for the former Crown Zellerback Corporation in Carthage. He worked there for over 30 years until his retirement in 1985 as a machine tender.
He was a parishioner of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville, and was a member of the St. James River Corporation’s Paper Makers Union.
Joe’s special enjoyments in life were hunting and fishing,, camping, boating, travelling to Florida, and he especially liked snowmobiling.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald W. and Valerie Getman, George G. and Terri Getman, and Paul E. and Mary Getman, all of Lowville; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Anna Gordecki, of Rome; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Michael, Stanley and John Szalkowski, and two sisters, Agnes Johnson, and Mary Baker, who died on March 17, 2011.
Joe’s funeral will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, officiating. Burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery, Lowville.
Calling hours will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
