Francis G. "Junior" Kloster
CROGHAN, NY ~ Francis G. Kloster, 71, of 7521 Boliver Rd., died Friday, August 20, 2010, at Upstate University Medical Center, Syracuse, where he had been admitted on August 14th.
Born May 20, 1939, in Croghan, a son of Francis G. and Dora Zehr Kloster, he was educated at Beaver River Central School.
A marriage to Sally Chartrand in 1959 at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, later ended in divorce.
For 2 years following high school, Mr. Kloster worked on the Paul Lyndaker farm in Croghan. From 1957 until 1966, he worked for Climax Manufacturing Company in Castorland. In 1966, he became a member of Local 322, Laborers’ Union, based in Massena and Watertown, and began working various road and building construction jobs throughout the North Country and as far south as Cortland. During this time, he worked primarily for Triple C Construction out of Rome on road construction and for Black River Constructors at Ft. Drum on building construction. In 1995, after 29 years, he took an early retirement, and in 1996, went to work part-time for Green Thumb, an organization that was associated with the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in Lowville and that provided roadside cleaning and grass maintenance along truck routes and trails. He worked for Green Thumb for 6 years until he completely retired in 2002.
Mr. Kloster was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan. In addition to Laborers’ Union Local 322, he was a member of the Balsam Creek Hunting Club.
Mr. Kloster’s favorite hobby was woodworking. He also enjoyed hunting and traveling.
Surviving besides his former wife, Sally, of Croghan, are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joey S. Kloster, of Croghan, and Todd F. and Linda Kloster, of Holmes, NY; three daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah J. and Walter Hartshorne, of Lowville, Darlene J. and Philip Hawkins, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Laurie S. and Bryant Weaver, of Conway, SC; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren; three brothers, Eugene Kloster, John Kloster and Dennis Kloster, all of Croghan, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A son, Jeffrey Kloster, a sister, Irene Lashbrooks, and a brother, Harold Kloster, predeceased him.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial Mass that will be held on Tuesday, August 24th, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating. His burial will be in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Belfort.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial donations may be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department or Lewis County Friends of Hospice.
Arrangements are with the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.

We are all so sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Jr. He surely will be missed, esp. his picking and joking… We will all have to remember the good old days with him and keep him close in our hearts.
