<p>     CLAYMONT, DE/CROGHAN, NY ~ Charles W. “Chick” Sutter, 95, of Claymont, Delaware, died February 10, 2012, in CCBS Wilmington Hospital in Wilmington, DE.</p>
<p>     Born in 1916 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Herman F. and Agnes T. Benny Sutter, he graduated from LaSalle College High School in Philadelphia, where he was an All-Scholastic football player, as well as a basketball player and an outstanding Track and Field competitor, especially in shot put and high jump. After attending Pennington Prep in New Jersey, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania where he was a sophomore starter end on the great 1936 football team that featured his good friends Franny Murray, Lew Elverson and Bill Kurlish – the Destiny Backfield. Chick was a graduate of the University’s Wharton School and a member of the Sphinx Society.</p>
<p>     A World War II veteran, he entered the US Army on March 3, 1943, and served with the HDQTRS Company 741st Railway Operation Battalion throughout the European Theatre of Operations. A recipient of three bronze stars, he was honorably discharged as a Communications Technician 5th Grade on January 30, 1946.</p>
<p>     Following the war, he worked with his brother, Edward, in the business that they co-founded, Lafayette Packaging, in Pennsylvania.</p>
<p>     He had a great fondness for the North Country and for many years, he enjoyed traveling to and spending time at their family’s cottage at Effley Falls. Throughout his life, Mr. Sutter loved the Penn Relays, which he attended faithfully. Chick continued his love of football as a CYO coach for many years. As a grandfather, he was a great inspiration, coach and second father to his two grandsons, Andrew and Evan. He also loved nature, long walks, ornithology, Jazz and Classical music and literature. He was an &#8220;old school &#8220;gentleman who continues to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.</p>
<p>     Among his survivors are his two children, Charles D. Sutter, of Claymont, DE, and Andrea Baran, of Rochester, NY; three grandchildren, Andrew, Evan and Julianna, and one great-grandson, Samuel Joseph.</p>
<p>     Chick was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, the former Rachel Joan Anderson.</p>
<p>     His Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel of St. Vincent de Paul, Belfort, NY, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the adjoining church cemetery.</p>
<p>     In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Military Order of the Purple Heart, 7008 Little River Turnpike, PO Box 49, Annandale, VA 22003.</p>
<p>     Arrangements are with Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.</p>

<p>     CROGHAN, NY ~ Tyler Anthony Lyndaker, 23, of 7871 Long Pond Rd., Croghan, died Sunday, April 29, 2012, in the Town of Diana from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on South Creek Rd., near Harrisville.</p>
<p>     Tyler was born on June 1, 1988, in Lowville, NY, a son of Veryle N. and Jane L. Spagnolli Lyndaker, and was a 2007 graduate of Beaver River Central School.</p>
<p>     Following high school, he went to work for Rifenburg Construction Company of Troy, NY. Throughout the past 5 years, until the time of his death, he worked as laborer working on various road construction projects in the downstate area of New York including Albany and the New York State Thruway for the company.</p>
<p>     Throughout his life, Tyler loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting and brook trout fishing at Tide Lake and Big Sand ever since he was a young boy.  Additionally, he especially liked seasonal trapping for beaver, muskrat, fisher and otter.</p>
<p>     Besides his parents of Croghan, he is survived by his brother, Bryson A. Lyndaker, of Croghan; his paternal grandmother, Velma Lyndaker, of Croghan; his maternal great aunt, Elizabeth Spagnolli, of Beaver Falls; paternal uncles and aunts, Glenn and Nadeen Lyndaker, Rhonda and John Glenn, and Kenton Lyndaker, all of Croghan, and Lorie Glenn, of Lowville; maternal aunts and uncles, Mary Jo and William Burkhard, of Beaver Falls, Lori and Michael Wiley, of Cape Vincent, Tina and William Campeau, of Croghan, and Tonya and Tim Roach, of Round Hill, VA, and numerous cousins.</p>
<p>     He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Harold Lyndaker, and his maternal grandparents, Ermogine “Beany” and Ann Spagnolli.</p>
<p>     A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held on Thursday, at 11:00 a.m., at the Croghan Mennonite Church, Kirschnerville Rd., Croghan, with Bryan D. Catlin, Pastor of the Salem Christian Fellowship Church in Beaver Falls, officiating.  Immediately following the service, a funeral luncheon will be held in the church social hall that all in attendance are invited to attend.  Interment will be private.</p>
<p>     There will be no calling hours.</p>
<p>     In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salem Christian Fellowship Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 96, Beaver Falls, NY 13305.</p>

<p>GLENFIELD, NY ~ Richard William Steiner, 65, of 6437 Pine Grove Road, Glenfield, died Friday evening April 13, 2012, in the Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, where he had been a patient for the last week.</p>
<p>Richard was born on May 25, 1946, in Lowville, NY, the son of William Karl and Florence Winifred Tabolt Steiner. A lifelong resident of the area he attended Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan and Beaver River Central Schools.</p>
<p>He married Cheryl Hirsch on October 23, 1965, in St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.</p>
<p>Richard was employed with AMF Pool Cue Division in Lowville, and then became a paper maker with Uniroyal, Boise Cascade and Fibermark from 1967 until 2001. In 2001, he went to work for Kraft Foods in Lowville for a few years and then returned to help open the new Omniafiltra Mill in Beaver Falls, retiring in 2009.</p>
<p>He was a member of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan. He was also a member of the Lewis County Pool League playing on the team sponsored by the Watson Inn, and a lifetime member of the Gregg’s Lake Hunting Club until it was disbanded by the loss of the land in a sale to NYS. He also was a member of the Whispering Pines Hunting Club, and since 2004, was a member of the Bear Pond Hunting Club.</p>
<p>Richard was an active outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling especially when he was with his grandchildren Zackary, Lauren and Jacob.</p>
<p>Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul J. and Melissa Steiner, of Croghan, and Anthony “Tony” and Dana Steiner, of Cortland; a daughter and son-in-law; Laura and Shawn Pominville, of Utica; eight grandchildren; a sister, Joan Steiner Hanson of Cleveland, TN, and several nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>He was predeceased by a brother John “Jack” Steiner and a sister Betty Steiner Dawson.</p>
<p>Richard’s funeral services will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Main Street, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Bremen.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be from 4 ~ 7 p.m. on on Thursday at the funeral home.</p>
<p>In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367.</p>

<p>CROGHAN, NY ~ Thomas A. (“Tommy”) Nortz of 9638 Pearl St., Croghan, died Saturday, March 31st, 2012, at University Hospital in Syracuse.</p>
<p>He was born August 11, 1923, in the family home in Syracuse, New York, a son of Hilary and Addie Burkhard Nortz. He graduated from Lowville Free Academy in 1941.</p>
<p>In 1943 he joined the United States Army where he was trained to install and operate field radios, receive and send Morse code and perform radio maintenance. He was qualified as a .45 pistol sharp shooter. He volunteered for and served in the European Theatre of Operations with the 75th Infantry Division as an Anti-tank Gunner. He participated in the Rhineland-Ardennes and Central European Campaigns. Tommy was wounded in action on January 13, 1945 by heavy artillery near St. Vith, Belgium, during &#8220;The Battle of the Bulge&#8221;.  He was awarded the Purple Heart, the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with one bronze campaign star, a Combat Infantry Badge and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal on March 8, 1946.</p>
<p>Tommy married Ellen E. Campany on June 1, 1946, at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan with Rev. Amadeus Burke officiating. The couple operated THE NORTZ HOUSE in Belfort until 1947 when they purchased THE INDIAN RIVER HOTEL that they operated until December, 1955. Tommy worked as a Rural Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service for 29 years, retiring in 1980. The couple moved to Croghan in 1990.</p>
<p>Tommy was an active member of St. Anthony’s Parish, Indian River, and later at St. Stephen’s Parish in Croghan. He was a member of the Lowville VFW, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan.</p>
<p>Tommy loved playing euchre, volunteering for Legion events, cutting wood, watching softball games and taking rides in the countryside. He enjoyed visiting with friends and strangers alike and he was always ready to lend a helping hand.</p>
<p>Surviving are one son and his wife, David J. and Cathy Nortz, Springfield, MA; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Jane M. and Sam Jones, Brownville, Elaine K. Nortz of Washington, DC, Susan L. Nortz, Croghan, Mary Ann and John Reff, Clayton, and Beverly J. and Terry Moore, Lake Bonaparte (Harrisville), NY; seven grandchildren, Matt (Shannon) Jones, Jeffrey (Michele) Jones, Stephanie Jones and Josh Klein, Sarah Buckingham, Megan Buckingham, Elizabeth Reff and Natalie Reff; two great granddaughters, AJ and Alex Jones; two brothers, Edward (Dorothea), Youngstown, and Eugene (Patricia), Croghan; a sister, Ellen Zimmer, Rochester; two sister-in-laws, Marie Nortz, Croghan; Tillie Nortz, Chandler, Arizona, and over fifty nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>Tommy was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Ellen, and his brothers, Richard, Hilary, Donald and Harry.</p>
<p>A prayer service will be held at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10th, at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Main Street, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be from 4 ~ 8 p.m. on Monday, April 9th, at the Funeral Home.</p>

<p>Lowville, NY ~ Wilbur L. Stanford Sr., 87, of 7026 Peckham Rd., died unexpectedly Friday morning, March 9, 2012, at his residence after being in declining health for the last four years.</p>
<p>Wilbur was born on November 25, 1924, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, the son of Lewis and Emogene Young Stanford. A lifelong resident of the area he attended school in New Bremen and Copenhagen.</p>
<p>He married Beatrice M. Feisthamel on June 26, 1948, in St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with Rev. Hugh King, OFM, officiating.</p>
<p>Wilbur was a self-employed contractor in Lowville for many years retiring in 1991. He had also been in the logging business many years ago.</p>
<p>A World War II veteran, he was honorably discharged from the US Army after proudly serving his country during the war.</p>
<p>He was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Lowville. He was also a member of the Lowville Elks Lodge BPOE# 1605, Lowville American Legion Post #62, Lowville Fish and Game Club, and was a charter and lifetime member of the Lowville VFW Post 6912.</p>
<p>He was an active hunter and fisherman and was fortunate enough to harvest a buck this past hunting season. He was a very passionate fan of the NY Yankees and was also very fond of John Deere Equipment and still enjoyed driving his Gator and Mower.</p>
<p>Surviving besides his loving wife of 63 years, Beatrice, are his five children, Linda Turck, of Croghan, Wilbur (Sue) Stanford, Jr., of Glenfield, Robert F. Stanford, of Lowville, Paul (Lorrie) Stanford of Lowville, Patricia A. (Merle) Arndt, of Beaver Falls; eleven grandchildren who held a very special place in his heart, Kip (Julie) Turck and Philip (Nicole) Turck, both of New Bremen, Jennifer (Sean) Johnson and Wilbur (Erica) Stanford III, both of Beaver Falls, Travis Stanford and Michael Stanford, both of Lowville, Lindsey Stanford and fiancé, Lee Todeschini, of Brantingham, Shaun R. Stanford and fiancée, Lynn Walters, of Boonville, Kristel A. Stanford of Lowville, Mackenzie L. Demo and fiancé, William Ritz, and Kyle R. Demo, both of Croghan; fourteen great-grandchildren; an aunt, Clara Bartolley, of Lyons Falls; three step brothers, and several nieces and nephews.<br />
He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters, Evelyn Ingersoll, Helen Simpson and Margaret Koster.</p>
<p>Wilbur’s funeral will be held on Monday, March 12, 2012, beginning with a 12:15 p.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 1:00 p.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2 – 5 p.m. at the funeral home.</p>
<p>In lieu of flowers, in his memory, memorial contributions made be made to Lewis County Search and Rescue, 7782 West State Street, Lowville, NY 13367.</p>

<p>CROGHAN, NY ~ Jane E. Widrick, 74, of 6936 Convent St., died Friday, March 2, 2012, at her home where she was under the care of her family and and Lewis County Hospice.</p>
<p>Born November 20, 1937, in Croghan, the daughter of Daniel and Barbara Steria Roes, she was educated at Beaver River Central School from where she received her GED.</p>
<p>She married Richard J. Widrick on April 10, 1954, in the Croghan Mennonite Church with the Rev. Lloyd Boshart, officiating.  Mr. Widrick died on April 4, 2002.</p>
<p>Mrs. Widrick began work in 1968 in the cafeteria of Beaver River Central School.  She retired from there in June, 2000, after 32 years of service, the last several as its Head Baker.</p>
<p>Throughout her life, she enjoyed reading, crocheting, knitting, sewing, and especially time spent with her family and friends.</p>
<p>She was a member of the Croghan Mennonite Church.</p>
<p>Surviving are four sons and their wives, James R. and Judy Widrick, Lowville, Bruce C. and Kathleen Widrick, Tom J. and Sharon Widrick, and Terry S. and Michelle Widrick, all of Croghan; a daughter and her husband, Darlene J. and Jeffrey Sauter, Lowville; thirteen grandchildren, Maggi, Jacob, Danny, Stephanie, Ryan, Darin, Scott, Sarah, Shari, Kelsey, Amber, Morgan, and Tasha; five great-grandchildren, Desiree, Emilee, Mae, Ella and Aubree; two step grandchildren, Katelyn and Kyle; two step great-grandchildren, Missy and Cody, and nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>Besides her husband of 48 years, she was predeceased by her father and mother, and a brother Carlton Roes, who died in 1992.</p>
<p>Mrs. Widrick’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m., at the Croghan Mennonite Church with Chad Atwood, John Martin and Walt Morton, officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery later in the Spring.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan.</p>
<p>Memorial contributions may be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department’s Ambulance Fund or Lewis County Friends of Hospice.</p>

<p>CROGHAN, NY ~ Harold M. Martin, 85, formerly of 6881 Shady Avenue, Croghan, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, following a lengthy illness.</p>
<p>Harold was born on November 4, 1926, in Croghan, the son of the late David and Edith Bush Martin.  He was a 1944 graduate of Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.</p>
<p>Following his graduation, on November 8, 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy and attended Basic Training in Sampson, NY.  Following his training, he was assigned to the USS Augusta (CA31), a heavy cruiser and Flag Ship of the Asiatic and North Atlantic Fleet.  The Augusta was the ship on which the North Atlantic Charter was signed and also the ship that transported President Harry S. Truman to the Potsdam Conference.  Harold was proud to be a member of the ship’s company on the voyage with President Truman.  He was honorably discharged from the US Navy on July 11, 1946, at Lido Beach, LI, NY, as Yeoman 3rd Class.</p>

<p>Harold married Suzanne Powers of Croghan on July 22, 1961, at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, with Rev. Reginald Baliman, OFM, officiating.  Suzanne died on April 16, 2003.</p>
<p>He was employed as an accountant for Wm. Burkhard &amp; Sons in Croghan for 18 years and then worked for Boise Cascade Corporation in Beaver Falls, retiring as its Sales Production Coordinator on February 28, 1989, after 20 years of service. For several years, he was also a member of the staff at Scanlon Funeral Home in Croghan and Harrisville.</p>
<p>Harold was a life-long communicant of St. Stephen’s Church and had served as a Church Lector and Eucharistic Minister for many years.  He also served as the Secretary/Treasurer for St. Stephen’s Cemetery Association for 29 years before retiring in July 1988.  Additionally, he served as the Croghan Village Clerk and Village Trustee for several years.</p>
<p>Harold was a member of the American Legion, Beaver River Memorial Post #1663, in Croghan.</p>
<p>Surviving are three step-sons, Keith J. (June)Powers of Rochester, John L. Powers of Watertown and Robert J. (JoAnne) Powers of Spencerport; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Mildred Chartrand, who died on September 4, 1990, and his step-daughter-in-law, Dorris Powers, who died in 2009.</p>
<p>Harold’s funeral will be held on Monday, beginning with a 10:45 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by an 11:30 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. ~ 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.</p>
<p>Cremation will follow the Funeral Mass with his interment taking place later in the spring with Military Honors in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>In lieu of flowers, in his memory, memorial contributions made be made to a charity of one’s choice.</p>

<p>CROGHAN, NY ~ Walter J. “Willie” Brownell, 87, of 6897 Mechanic Street, Croghan, died on Friday, February 24, 2012, at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, Lowville, where he had resided since February 14th following a brief illness.</p>
<p>Walter was born on May 29, 1924, in Worth, NY, a son of Sterling and Elsie Freeman Brownell, and was educated in rural schools in Barnes Corners and Copenhagen.</p>
<p>He married Jean L. Mattimore on September 16, 1945, in the rectory of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.</p>
<p>He retired in 1984 from Latex Fiber Products in Beaver Falls, and had also been employed as a bus driver for the Beaver Falls Central School.</p>
<p>During the 1960’s, he and his wife owned and operated Willie and Jean’s Diner on Main Street in Croghan.</p>
<p>Walter was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, and was a former member of its Knights of Columbus. He had also been a member of the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department.</p>
<p>Throughout his life, he took pleasure in fishing, hunting, playing golf, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and adored all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.</p>
<p>Surviving besides his wife Jean of 66 years, are two daughters, Cynthia Bush of Croghan, and Theresa (Carl) McCane III, of Lake Ariel, PA; a son, Stephen Brownell, of Central Square; ten grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Loftus, of Gansevoort, and Evelyn VanSeveran of Green Bay, WI; two brothers, Neil (Jerrie) Brownell of West Monroe and James (Connie) Brownell of Pulaski, and several nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>He was predeceased by a son Terry Brownell, a sister Beatrice Traynor, and four brothers, Vernon Brownell, Alan Brownell, Merrill Brownell and his twin brother, Wilbur Brownell.</p>
<p>Walter’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating. Calling hours will be on Monday from 2-4 &amp; 6-8 PM at the funeral home.  Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>In his memory, memorial contributions may be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Fund.</p>

<p>PHILADELPHIA, NY ~ Abigail Ruby Louise Lewis, precious daughter of April L. and William F. “Butch” Lewis, III, Philadelphia, was stillborn on Friday, February 3, 2012, at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, NY.</p>
<p>Besides her parents, Abigail is survived by her maternal grandfather, Henry M. Norris, paternal grandfather William Lewis and wife Donna, and paternal great-grandmother, Louise B. Lewis, all of Antwerp; paternal grandmother, Lynette Lewis of Missouri, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.</p>
<p>She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother, Judy (LaVancha) Norris, who died in 2002.</p>
<p>Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.</p>
<p>Arrangements are with Scanlon Funeral Home, Harrisville.</p>

<p>BRENTWOOD, LI/CROGHAN, NY ~ Walter J. Houppert, 85, of Brentwood, L.I., died peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, January 30, 2012, at Stonybrook University Medical Center in Stonybrook, Long Island, NY. Mr. Houppert had been a patient in the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stonybrook since 2001, prior to being admitted to the Medical Center.</p>
<p>Born May 6, 1926, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, a son of Clinton and Bertha Dicob Houppert, he graduated from Fr. Leo Memorial School in 1942.</p>
<p>He married Daryl J. Bush on August 7, 1948, in St. Vincent DePaul Church in Belfort, NY, with the Rev. Cosmos Girur, OFM, officiating.</p>
<p>A World War II veteran, Mr. Houppert entered the US Navy in May, 1943, and served until his honorable discharge from Sampson Naval Base on November 21, 1945.</p>
<p>Following the war, he worked on his father’s farm in Croghan, the Croghan Flooring Mill, and the J.P. Lewis Company in Beaver Falls. In 1947, he moved to Long Island where he worked for Republican Aviation in Farmingdale, LI, as a Machinist for 21 years. In the late 1960’s, he began work as a Home Improvement Contractor installing windows and doors, retiring in 1990 after being injured after suffering a fall at work.</p>
<p>He was a communicant of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Brentwood, and was a member of the Joseph Loeffler Post 1006 American Legion in Brentwood and the IAM International Association of Machinists in Farmingdale, LI.</p>
<p>Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting and fishing until suffering a stroke in February, 2001.</p>
<p>Surviving besides his wife, Daryl, of 63 years, are two sons, Randy and wife, Lise Houppert, of Islip, NY, and Calvin and wife, Trish Houppert, of Maryville, TN; three daughters, Pamela and husband, Bill Thurston, of St. Johnsbury, VT, Gale and husband, Steve Kahn, of Coconut Creek, Florida, and Holly and husband, Anthony Petrucci, of Smithtown, NY; 13 grandchildren, Karena, Gavin, Brianne, Ashley, Carissa, Joshua, David, Michael, Deanna, Matthew, Darielle, Hannah and Zachery; one great grandson, Abel; a sister, Beatrice Kloster, of Croghan, NY; three brothers, Arthur, Russell and Rodney Houppert, all of Castorland, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>He was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley Houppert, who died in 1992, and Harold Houppert, who died in 2003, and a sister, Helen Thompson, who died in 1980.</p>
<p>Walter’s funeral will be held on Saturday, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating.  His burial with military honors will be held in the Spring in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>Calling hours for family and friends will be from 2:00-4:00 pm, and 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home.</p>

<p>CASTORLAND, NY ~ Bernard S. Kampnich, 83, of 8794 Cut-Off Rd., Castorland, formerly of Rt. 812, Croghan, died Thursday, December 22, 2011, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where he had been a patient since December 16th.</p>
<p>Born on September 19, 1928, in Croghan, NY, a son of Laurence C. and Flora Campany Kampnich, he was educated in the District 9 School in Gooville and later at Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.</p>
<p>A Korean Conflict veteran, Mr. Kampnich enlisted in the US Air Force on December 28, 1950, and on January 3, 1951, entered and received his Basic Training at Lackland Air Base, and also attended Aeronautical &amp; Engineering School at Perrin Air Base, both in Texas. His overseas service included 9 months in Japan and 8 months in Korea. In 1953, he returned to Perrin AFB in Texas where he became a Crew Chief for T33 and F84 Fighter jets, and from where he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on December 10, 1954.</p>
<p>Following his military service, he became a member of the I.B.E.W. Local 1249 Union, working primarily as a tractor trailer driver transporting supplies and equipment to various contractors during the construction of large scale power projects throughout New York state including the Nine Mile II nuclear power plant at Oswego. As an expert electrician, he also had worked for Lambert Electric in Croghan for a number of years.</p>
<p>Mr. Kampnich was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, and was a 55 year member of IBEW Local 1249. He was also a member of the Lowville VFW, Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan, Massaweepie, Silver Mine and Pepper Box hunting clubs, Long Pond Snow Sled Club, Harrisville Rod &amp; Gun Club, and Antique Automobile Club of America.</p>
<p>A talented Jack and Master of many trades, he was extremely skilled in being able to create and fabricate any metal or wooden parts for just about anything, and was always very meticulous with everything that he made. In addition to “inventing”, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his family and many friends, and especially doing anything with his 1915 Brass Model T or the Model A’s of his historic car collector friends.</p>
<p>Surviving are three brothers, Herbert J. Kampnich, Harrisville, Louis H. Kampnich, Castorland, Donald J. Kampnich, Croghan; a sister, Maryann C. Mooney, Castorland, and several nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>He was predeceased by his brother John L. Kampnich, who died in 1995.</p>

<p>Calling hours will be held on Saturday morning (prior to the funeral Mass) from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.</p>

<p>     HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Barbara A. Arnold, 81, of 14408 Maple St., passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at her home surrounded by loved ones.</p>
<p>     Born in Harrisville on March 22, 1930, a daughter of Hubert and Dorothy (Dobson) McMahon, she was educated in Harrisville schools.</p>
<p>     She is survived by her five children, Judy (Bruce) St. Lawrence, Rochester, Michael (Tammy) Arnold, Harrisville, Patrick (Patricia) Arnold, Syracuse, Paul Arnold, Maryland, and Thomas (Juli) Arnold, Atlanta; eleven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.</p>
<p>     Barbara spent most of her time as a homemaker. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, with family being the focus of her life.</p>
<p>     Barbara&#8217;s favorite pastimes including doing word puzzles and especially spending time with her family.</p>
<p>     She was a member of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville.</p>
<p>     A memorial service with funeral Mass will be held for family and friends on Friday, November 25, 2011, at 12 Noon at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Harrisville.  Interment will be in St. Francis Solanus Cemetery, Harrisville.</p>
<p>     There will be no calling hours.</p>
<p>     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lewis County Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367, or to St. Francis Solanus Church, P. O. Box 208, Harrisville, NY 13648.</p>

<p>     HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Pamela K. McCarter, 58, of 8278 NYS Rt.3 (Main St.), died Friday, October 7, 2011, at her home where she was under the care of her loving family and Hospice of Lewis County.</p>
<p>     Born in Gouverneur, NY, on September 1, 1953, Pam was one of twin daughters of Doran E. and Dorothy L. Gordon Waugh. She was a 1971 graduate of Harrisville Central School and attended Plattsburg State Teachers College for over 3 years, transferring to Jefferson Community College in Watertown from where she received her RN degree in 1980.</p>
<p>     Following college, Pam worked as a worked as a Physical Therapy Assistant in Gouverneur before becoming a Registered Nurse working in the Orthopedic Unit at Mercy Hospital in Watertown. During this time Pam met her husband Lonnie S. McCarter on a blind date and they were married on December 18, 1982, in St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, and started a family. Pam and Lonnie then moved from Watertown to Harrisville to raise their children. Pam took over the operation of the village’s family-owned Mapleview Motel while caring for her children before she began working as the co-owner with her husband at Waugh’s True Value Hardware Store where she and Lonnie worked together until the time of her death.</p>
<p>     Besides her husband and mother of Harrisville, she is survived by a son, Colin S. McCarter, of Los Angeles, CA; two daughters, Sarah A. McCarter, of San Francisco, CA and Shannon K. McCarter, of Irvine, CA; a brother, Edward G. Waugh, of Farmingdale, NJ; two sisters, Constance W. Roese, of Forest Hill, Maryland, and her twin, Patricia L. Scott, of Watertown; several nieces and nephews, and her mother-in-law, Barbara A. McCarter, of Harrisville.</p>
<p>     Pam was a long time member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Harrisville where she volunteered her time teaching Sunday School for several years.</p>
<p>     Pam was a strong, caring and resilient woman who loved her family very much. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend who was very passionate about caring for animals, especially the family dogs Lady and Goose.</p>
<p>     A Memorial Service will be held for family and friends on Saturday, October 15th, at 12 Noon, at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Harrisville.</p>
<p>     There will be no calling hours.</p>

<p>CROGHAN, NY ~ Henry J. Grunert, 86, formerly of 8483 Erie Canal Rd., Croghan, died Sunday, September 18, 2011, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where he had resided since 2009.</p>
<p>Born December 14, 1924, in Lowville, NY, the son of Eugene and Leona J. Adams Grunert, he attended country school on the Number Three Road, and later was graduated from Lowville Free Academy.</p>
<p>He married Nellie McGillvray on May 31, 1946, at St. Peter’s Church, Lowville, with the Rev. John McNamara, officiating. Mrs. Grunert died on March 22, 2006.</p>
<p>Following high school, Henry worked as a carpenter for various contractors in the Lowville area helping build barns throughout Lewis County. For 5 years from 1945 until 1950, he worked as a rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service covering the Lowville RD3 route. In the 1950’s, he took over his family’s dairy farm on the Erie Canal Rd. and operated it until his son, Michael, assumed ownership in 1968. For a short period during the 1960’s, he also worked for the Croghan Cheese Plant, and in 1966, went to work for Latex Fibre Industries in Beaver Falls, from where he retired in 1992 as a machine tender.</p>
<p>Mr. Grunert was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, and was also a member of the Number Four Hunting Club.</p>
<p>Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, and producing maple syrup. One of his favorite hobbies was as a bee keeper for many years.</p>
<p>Surviving are five sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Ellon, Henry E. and Janine, Danny L. and Robin, and Andy J. and Gail, all of Lowville, and Steven J. and Deanna, of Glenfield; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Cathy and Fred Leviker, Adams, Diane M. and Henry Bush, Glenfield, Nancy E. Brown, Lowville, Linda A. and Steven Fowler, Harrisville, and June A. Grunert and her companion, Liz Kelly, Lynn, MA; a sister, Doris Houppert, Adams Center; 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>He was predeceased by his sister, Dora Zehr.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be on Tuesday, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.</p>
<p>His funeral will be on Wednesday, beginning with a 9:15 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>Memorial donations may be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department or Lewis Co. Friends of Hospice.</p>
<p>The Grunert family extends a very special thank you to all of the 4th floor staff at the nursing home.</p>

<p>HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Joseph D. Lancor, 82, of 14181 State St., died Sunday, September 4, 2011, at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, where he had been a patient since September 1st.</p>
<p>Born in Harrisville, NY, on October 5, 1928, a son of Joseph “Roy” and Marion Laide Lancor, he was graduated from Harrisville High School in 1948.</p>
<p>He married Virginia A. Fratini on May 28, 1960, in St. Agatha’s Catholic Church in Canastota, NY.</p>
<p>Following high school, he went to work for Natural Dam Paper Mill in Gouverneur and also worked for Jones &amp; Laughlin Steel Corporation at Benson Mines in Star Lake. He later went to work for the Newton Falls Paper Company in Newton Falls, and remained there until his retirement in 1991 after spending nearly 40 years with the company.</p>
<p>He was a member St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Harrisville, the Harrisville Rod &amp; Gun Club and was a former member of the Silver Dawn Hunting Club.</p>
<p>Among his favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, reading, watching cowboy movies and traveling to the Akwesasne Casino in Hogansburg with his wife.</p>
<p>Surviving besides his wife of 51 years, are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tracy J. and Angie Lancor, and Scott F. Lancor, all of Harrisville; 4 granddaughters; 3 great grandsons; a sister, Margaret Chamberlain, of Canton; a brother, Neil Lancor, of Watertown, and several nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>Three brothers, Richard, Robert and Jack Lancor, all predeceased him.</p>
<p>Joe’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m., from St. Francis Solanus Church, Harrisville, with the Rev. Robert L. Decker, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Harrisville.</p>
<p>There will be no calling hours.</p>
<p>Memorial donations may be made to the Harrisville Rescue Squad.</p>

<p>CROGHAN ~ Ermogine Forni Spagnolli, 87, of 6926 George St., Croghan, formerly of Beaver Falls and Cape Vincent, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at Lewis County General Hospital following complications from a stroke suffered on Thursday, August 11, 2011.</p>
<p>“Beany,” as he was known to all, was born October 7, 1923, in Croghan, NY, son of Antonio and Josephine Forni Spagnolli.  He graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1941 and went to work for Beaverite Products, Inc. Beaver Falls.</p>
<p>A World War II veteran, he entered the U.S. Army in February, 1943.  After receiving his basic training at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO, he was assigned to the 1881st Aviation Engineers Camouflage Battalion.  He was stationed in Tucson, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO and Raton, NM.  In December of 1944, he was ordered to the Philippine Islands where he served until February of 1945 when he was honorably discharged after having attained the rank of 1st Sergeant.  During his military tenure he received the Distinguished Service Badge, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine’s Liberation Ribbon.  Upon his return home from the war he returned to work at Beaverite Products and retired as Plant Manager in 1987.</p>
<p>He married Ann LaMourey on October 6, 1951, at the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church<br />
with Reverend Kendall Scouten officiating.  Mrs. Spagnolli passed away on October 9, 2009.</p>
<p>Surviving are their five daughters, Mary Jo and William Burkhard, Beaver Falls, Lori and Michael<br />
Wiley Cape Vincent, Tina and William Campeau, Croghan, Jane and Veryle Lyndaker, Croghan and Tonya and Timothy Roach, Round Hill, VA, a sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Spagnolli, Beaver Falls, a sister-in-law, Muriel Spagnolli, Binghamton, a brother-in-law, Cul ver LaMourey, 15 grandchildren; Jason and Nicholas Burkhard, Matthew, Scott, Elizabeth and Bryan Wiley, Erica, Jacob and Angela Campeau, Bryson and Tyler Lyndaker, Joshua, Lucas, Noah and Caleb Roach and 6 great grandchildren; Haleigh and Alison Campeau, Addison Burkhard, Liam Lumpp, Melanie and Tatum Wiley.  A brother, Dino Spagnolli passed away on Dec 12, 2010.</p>
<p>Beany was a past member of the Beaver Falls Fire Department, a member of the United<br />
Methodist Church, Beaver Falls, a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion, the Croghan Railway Historical Society and was an Eagle Scout.  Beany loved trains, was a stamp collector and an avid follower of sports, especially the sports his children and grandchildren participated in.  In his earlier years he was an avid bowler an enjoyed traveling to Hawaii.</p>
<p>Memorial Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday August 19, 2011 from the Beaver Falls United<br />
Methodist Church with retired United Methodist minister, Rev. Bruce W. Chapman and Rev. Tracy L. Cook officiating.  Interment with military honors will be made in the Riverside Annex Cemetery, Beaver Falls.  Calling hours will be held 6-8 PM Thursday at the Scanlon Funeral Home 9791 Main Street, Croghan.  Memorial Contributions may be made to the Croghan or Beaver Falls Fire Department and the Railroad Historical Society of Northern NY P.O. <p>     She was predeceased by her daughter, Joanne Hennessy, who died in 1999, two brothers, Reginald Davie, who died at birth, and Stanley Davie, who died in 1951.</p>

<p>CROGHAN, NY ~ Gerald V. “Dottie” Schneeberger, 89, of Steepleview Courts, Croghan, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at his residence.</p>
<p>Born on February 2, 1922, in Beaver Falls, a son of Jacob and Charlotte Martin Schneeberger, he was educated at Beaver Falls High School.</p>
<p>A World War II veteran, he entered the US Army on September 23, 1942, and served throughout the war in Panama, France and Germany with Battery C 67 AAA Battalion. A recipient of the Bronze Star for action above and beyond the call of duty in Southern France, he was honorably discharged as a PFC on November 28, 1945, from Ft. Dix, NJ.</p>
<p>He married Nina E. Jackson on November 8, 1947, in St. Stephen’s Church with the Rev. Amadeus Burke, OFM, officiating.</p>
<p>Following the war, Mr. Schneeberger went to work for the J.P. Lewis Company in Beaver Falls, retiring from the finishing department there in 1984 after 39 years of service.</p>
<p>Surviving besides his wife of 63 years, are three sons and daughters-in-law, and a daughter and son-in-law, Gerald V. and Carol Schneeberger, 2nd, of Croghan, Thomas M. and Ann Schneeberger, of Lowville, David A. and (LouAnn) Schantz, of Freeport, FL, and Joseph A. and Debra Schneeberger, of Oviedo, FL; 6 grandchildren; a great grandson; a brother, Gary Schneeberger, of Glenfield, and several nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>He was predeceased by a daughter Nanette M. Schneeberger, who died on January 18, 1981, two brothers, Francis and Lyle Schneeberger, and a sister, Mary Frank.</p>
<p>Mr. Schneeberger was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan and was a member of the Croghan K of C. He was also a life member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan, and was a member of the Beaver Falls Volunteer Fire Department.</p>
<p>In his earlier years, he was an active bowler, softball player and umpire for men’s league area softball. Throughout his life, he took great pleasure in travelling and dancing with his wife, and was a faithful NY Yankee’s fan.</p>
<p>A funeral Mass for Mr. Schneeberger will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home in Croghan.</p>

<p>HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Alice Marie Pike, 82, formerly of Church St., Harrisville, died Saturday, July 16, 2011, at The Country Manor Nursing &amp; Rehabilitation Centre, Carthage, surrounded by her loving family.</p>
<p>Born June 3, 1929, in Albany, NY, the daughter of Richard and Emma Roesch O’Connell, she was educated in Troy schools and was graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy in 1948, where she was the Captain of her high school women’s basketball team.</p>
<p>She married John B. “Jack” Pike, who also was a Naval veteran assigned to Naval Intelligence, on February 27, 1954, in Sacred Heart Church in Troy. Mr. Pike died on March 25, 1998.</p>
<p>Following high school she worked as a clerk typist for the New York Telephone &amp; Telegraph Company in New York City until November, 1951, when she enlisted in the US Navy. During the course of her training and service, she was assigned as the secretarial assistant to Professor Francis J. DeCelles at the US Naval Intelligence School in Washington, D.C. She was honorably discharged as a Seaman on March 10, 1954.</p>
<p>After their Naval service, Alice and her husband returned to Harrisville where she had resided until her admission to Country Manor in 2004. Throughout her earlier years, she worked as a mother and homemaker and also provided cleaning and babysitting services to area families. For 5 years during the 1970’s, she worked at Bomax Manufacturing in Watertown, and for 8 years during the 1980’s worked as a cafeteria assistant at Harrisville Central School. She was also a Town of Diana Tax Collector for many years, and delivered Meals on Wheels during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.</p>
<p>Mrs. Pike was a communicant of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Harrisville, and was a lifetime member of its Daughters of Isabella, Salve Regina Circle.</p>
<p>Throughout her life, she took great pleasure working with crafts, especially knitting and crocheting, cooking and watching professional basketball on TV. She was also an avid reader and particularly enjoyed bowling.</p>
<p>Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, and three daughters and two sons-in-law, Stephen J. and Lori Pike, of Madison, VA, Ann M. and Wayne Hooper, of Port Byron, Theresa J. Morelock, of Humble, TX, and Mary A. and Kenneth Weeks, of Harrisville; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, and nieces and a nephew.</p>
<p>She was predeceased by two brothers, Sonny and Raymond O’Connell.</p>
<p>Alice’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service from the Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State St., Harrisville, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Francis Solanus Church, Harrisville, with the Rev. Robert L. Decker, Pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Harrisville.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be on Tuesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.</p>

<p>CROGHAN, NY ~ Mary Kathryn Demo, 78, of 7162 Belfort Road, Croghan, died with her loving family at her side on Monday, July 11, 2011, at SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY, where she had been a patient for the past four weeks.</p>
<p>Mary was born on June 1, 1933, in Boonville, NY, a daughter of Albert and Julia Moltz Fey. She was educated in Boonville and was graduated from Boonville Central School in 1951.</p>
<p>She married Eugene P. Demo on July 13, 1957, in St. Joseph’s Church in Boonville.</p>
<p>Shortly after her graduation from high school, she went to work as a secretary for Shaffer’s Motor Sales in Boonville until her marriage in 1957. Following her marriage, she worked as a mother and homemaker until 1973, when she went to work at Beaverite Products, Inc., in Beaver Falls, and retired from their Croghan plant in 1995.</p>
<p>Mary was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan, and along with her husband, was one of the first active greeters of the church for over 20 years. She was also a member of the church’s Rosary Society and the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion Auxiliary in Croghan.</p>
<p>Throughout her life, Mary’s special enjoyments included bowling in the women’s leagues, doing jigsaw puzzles, playing Bingo, meeting with her friends to have morning coffee at Wishy’s, watching women’s soccer, spur of the moment family barbeques, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren.</p>
<p>She is survived by her loving husband, Eugene, and her five children; Susan D. (Stuart) Salmon, of Glenfield, Diane L. (Keith) Philo, of Carthage, Gary S. Demo, Joseph A. Demo and Linda A. (Daniel) Nuffer, all of Croghan; a brother, James (Lois) Fey, of Boonville and a sister, Shirley Flynn, of Glenfield; 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>She was predeceased by a son, Randy P. Demo, who died in 1986, a brother, Clarence Fey, who died in 2000, and a son-in-law, Richard Thomas, who died in 2010.</p>
<p>Mary’s funeral will be held on Friday, July 15, 2011, beginning with a 9:15 a.m. prayer service, at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Main St. Croghan, followed by a 10:00 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating.</p>
<p>Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.</p>
<p>Calling hours will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.</p>
<p>Memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, NY.</p>
