CROGHAN ~ A memorial service for Ellen M. Kampnich, 77, formerly of Steepleview Courts, Croghan, who died on Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Lewis County General Hospital, will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel Chapin, pastor of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, officiating. Burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery, Lowville.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, beginning at 9:00 am until the time of her service.

Born September 16, 1931, in Lowville, NY, a daughter of Nelson S. “Pete” and Mina A. Smith Gowing, she was graduated from Lowville Academy in 1949. Following high school, Mrs. Kampnich worked as a telephone operator for General Telephone of Upstate New York out of their Lowville office for 5 years.

She married Donald J. Kampnich on December 28, 1953, at St. Peter’s Church, Lowville. The marriage later ended in divorce.

After raising her family and assisting with operation of the Kampnich Dairy Farm on Rt. 812 in Croghan from 1956 until 1979, she then went to work for Ames Department Store in Lowville. In 1981, she moved to Rochester, where she went to work for the Eastman Kodak Company as an Inspector and File Clerk until 1986, when she returned to work at Ft. Drum as a File Clerk. She retired as a Purchasing Agent from Ft. Drum in 1996 after 10 years of service.

Ellen is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca A. and Beryl Walseman II, of Carthage; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Roland J. and Delta Kampnich, of Castorland, Paul N. and Janice Kampnich, of Croghan, Lynn T. and Wendy Kampnich, of LaFargeville, and Laurence C. Kampnich, of Lowville; 13 grandchildren, 6 great granddaughters; a brother Franklyn Gowing, of Lowville, a sister, Nancy Eisenschmid, of Port Bay, NY, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Rebecca, the twin of Roland, who died shortly after birth on December 4, 1954.

She enjoyed playing cards, dominos, puzzles, knitting and spending time with her family and friends.

Kampnich family, We were surprised and saddened to hear of Ellen’s death. We had visited her a month ago and thought she looked good and in good spirits. Your have our sympathy as you go through this grieving time. May God bless each of you. Lloyd and Jane
