HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Cherry L. McCarthy, 93, of 8114 North Shore Rd., died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at Carthage Area Hospital, with her loving family at her side. Mrs. McCarthy had been admitted to the hospital on July 30th.
Born April 7, 1917, in Edwards, NY, a daughter of Frank and Bernice Lillis Hall, she was educated in Edwards schools. She married Philip F. McCarthy on April 6, 1934, at the United Methodist Church in Harrisville, with the Rev. Frank Jones, officiating. Mr. McCarthy died on November 25, 1975.
Cherry was a well-known baker throughout her life, being especially renowned in the North Country for her homemade baked pies. In the early and middle 1960’s, she baked pies for the former Pierce’s Diner in Harrisville, and during the later 1960’s and 1970’s, she worked for the late Jim Scanlon in helping him establish the original Scanlon’s Bakery in the Harris block, also in Harrisville. S he later worked for Buckingham’s G&B Market in Harrisville.
Mrs. McCarthy was a member of the Universalist Church, and was a congregant of the United Methodist Church in Harrisville.
She was a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Croghan, and also was a member of the Lake Bonaparte Conservation Club.
She enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests, including gardening, tending to her flowers, quilting, reading, watching old movies and spending winters in Tennessee and Florida. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends, and always keeping them supplied with delicious pies, jams, jellies and fudge.
Surviving are her four children, Philip J. and wife, Diane McCarthy, of Gouverneur, Richard G. and wife, Marilyn McCarthy, of Texas, Marilyn J. and husband, Jay Stevens, of Johnson City, TN, and Marie L. McCarthy and partner, Linda Sgroi, of Syracuse; 8 grandchildren, Rick McCarthy, of Atlanta, GA, Cassi Reynolds, of Baldwinsville, Michael McCarthy, of Orlando, FL, Melanie Angelino, of Ft. Myers, FL, Robert McCarthy, of Coats, NC, Mark Stevens and Denise Stevens, both of Oneida, and Debbie Crowder, of Johnson City, TN; many special great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; a brother, Frederick Hall, of Star Lake; a sister, Patricia Coffie, of Watertown; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many “special” friends.
Twin brothers, Fred and Frank Hall, who died in infancy, two sisters, Geraldine Hall and Kathleen Arnold, and a granddaughter, Maria Angelino, predeceased her.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State St., Harrisville, with the Rev. Frances K. Hemstreet, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Harrisville, officiating. Burial will be in the Harrisville Community Cemetery, Harrisville.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend her calling hours on Friday, from 4 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church in Harrisville.
