CROGHAN -Thomas M. Meyer, 55, formerly of Croghan, died Friday, August 7, 2009, at Lewis County General Hospital, where he had been a patient since August 1st of this year.

Born August 3, 1954, in Lowville, NY, the son of the late William A. and Mary “Peg” M. Giblin Meyer, he graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1972. After high school he entered the US Navy in August, 1972, and served primarily as a Medical Corpsman stationed at St. Albans City Hospital in Queens, NY.  He was honorably discharged in 1976.

Following his discharge from the Navy, he stayed on at St. Albans when it was changed over to a Veteran’s Administration Hospital and worked as a maintenance manager from 1976 until an accident on August 2, 1989, when he fell head first 17 feet from a ladder suffering severe head injuries that left him permanently disabled. After his accident, he was initially a resident of High Gate Manor Rehabilitation Center in Troy, NY, until August of 1999, when his family had him transferred to the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility in Lowville.

A marriage to Donna De Carlo ended in divorce.

Mr. Meyer had been a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, and was a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion, also in Croghan. He enjoyed being involved in his children’s activities including being a Boy Scout leader and a soccer coach.  He also liked fishing and basketball, and was an avid New York Mets fan who loved to go to Shea Stadium.

Surviving are his two sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph M. Meyer of Ft. Drum, NY, Dr. John M. and Sheena Meyer of Charlotte, NC, and a daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Juan Colon, of Central Islip, (Long Island) NY; six brothers including his twin Timothy J. and wife Connie, of Waseca, MN, Robert J. and wife Donna (Lu), of Croghan, David L. and wife Sandy, of Croghan, Peter W. and wife Mary, of Lowville, Paul F. and wife Rikki, of Gardner, KS, and Dennis A. and wife Bethany, of Croghan; three sisters, Susan M. Montanye, Janet A. and husband Raymond Moser, and Sarah J. O’Brien, all of Croghan; 4 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Janice, the twin of Janet, who died in infancy at the age of 6 months in 1953, and Mary who died at birth in 1968.

His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel Chapin, pastor, officiating, Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 on Monday, at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lewis County Search & Rescue, 7782 West State St., Lowville, NY 13367.

to the meyers
I was so very sorry to hear of Tom’s passing.
You know that you are all in my prayers and Cheryl and I will continue to pray for Tom and the Family in these times.
Tom was a good friend and I many fond memories from our years in Father Leo Memorial and Beaver River Central.
As he was the quarter back and I was the center with Jim Zehr the opposing middle gard on Defence you can all imagine the things that went on with all of use…

Tom will always be in my thoughts and prayers as will your family.
Tim football was a long time ago, but not so far.
Pete and Mary prayers are always there.
Dennis the fire department was fun at times…

Dear Meyer family,
I am unable to come to calling hours but want to extend my sympathy to all of you!
I went to school with Tom and have many memories of our school days and then seeing each other at our class reunion. He always was smilling and will be remembered by so many.
